SPRY'S "BRED FOR CARCASE" TAMWORTH BULL SALE DATE- Wednesday, 15th August 2012
Spry's "Bred for Carcase" Bull Sale Summary- 2011
By SAM NORRIS (The Land)
A SHORTHORN described by its vendors as "the best bull they've bred to date" topped at $23,000 last week at the Spry's Bred for Carcase bull sale, Tamworth.
Principals, Matt and Kate Spry, "Hillcrest",
"He's very commercially orientated and represents what we're aiming for," Mr Spry said.
The winning bidder was Dallas Schuller, Outback Shorthorns, Albury.
Exclusive E021, sired by Southcote Yale (P)(AI) and from Sprys Augustas Benchmark C069 (P)(ET)(AI), was in the top 10 per cent of the breed for milk, top 15pc for scrotal and rib fat, and top 25pc for rump fat.
At 23 months and 840 kilograms, his scans revealed eight millimetres rump fat; seven millimetres rib fat; intramuscular fat (IMF) of 5.4pc and an eye muscle area of 120 centimetres square.
Mr Schuller purchased Exclusive as a "very complete bull" and an outcross to his main line.
"He is a bull we found very hard to fault, which covers all the bases and ticks all the boxes as far as what are looking for," Mr Schuller said.
The young sire's structural correctness, maturity pattern, do-ability, good IMF, muscularity and temperament were just some of it's winning qualities, according to Mr Schuller.
"We really like the carcase and the softness - he's got muscle and weight in a moderate frame; he's very commercially focused," he said.
"We were told about the bull by several people so came to have a look.
"It's not often that a bull lives up to - and exceeds - expectations; we weren't disappointed."
Beside using Exclusive in the Outback stud herd and a select group of commercial females to breed steers for feedlot trials, Mr Schuller will market semen from the bull.
He said several packages had already been sold.
The sale was well attended by buyers from Albury in the south to Garah in the north and Wollomombi in the east, driving an average of $6515 on the Shorthorns, of which 33 of 37 had sold at the final hammer fall.
All four Charolais/Shorthorn bulls offered sold to average $4125.
Volume buyer was Presdar Trading manager, Terry Ogilvie, Woolamin, with two of each to average $4125.
Presdar's calves topped the
Mr Ogilvie bought the top-priced Shorthorn/Charolais, Sprys Brazen E050, by Palgrove Brazen (P), for $5000.

They bought three Shorthorn bulls to average $7000 and top of $9000 for Sprys Hunters Mission F36 (P) (SFA); in the breed's top 15pc for 400-day growth.
Bill Yates, "Amondale", Garah, bought three bulls to $9000, average $5667.
Mr Yates, a mixed farmer, has Shorthorn/Red Angus/Simmental cows but also a pure line of Shorthorns bred up over 40 years - including Spry's Zambesi blood.
His calves mostly go into feedlots but can be sold as weaners.
"I had bought at Spry's Wagga, now they're at
"Anyone who had $3000 to $4000 to spend could buy a bull, making them affordable," he said.
The sale was conducted by Landmark and Davidson Cameron and Company.
